John Prine Song
03:22
|
|||
I heard that he left town
On the Paradise train
He rode in the mail car
Through a hard driving rain
His condition was dire
The situation was grave
Down by the Green River he smiled
And he gave her a wave
I remember the songs he wrote
How could anyone forget?
And the gracious way he treated
Everyone he ever met
And I looked at that letter
He sent me long ago
He said it’s really simple
Here’s all you need to know
When you go out to dinner
Just skip the Hors d'oeuvres
Order the meatloaf
And save room for dessert
‘Cause meat and potatoes
Are all a man really needs
Give your hunny all the carrots
And tell her they’re from me
There’s two kinds of people
Wherever you go
The ones who say yes to love
And the ones who say no
You can holler and scream all day
You can beg, plead and cry
But you ain’t gonna change them
So why even try
When the voice in your head says
Start acting your age
Just set down that old guitar
And go dancing offstage
Then they’ll smile as you dance away
And they’ll holler out loud
As even the alley cat
At the stage door meows
Then they’ll smile as you dance away
And they’ll holler out loud
As even the alley cat
At the stage door goes wild

The Wise Old Owl
01:33
|
|
||
See the wise old owl
As the evening comes
Silhouetted by the light of the moon
He has seen storms come
And he’s seen them go
And he knows that this will pass soon
When the clouds in the sky
Are just about to cry
And here on the ground you feel small
You don’t have to hide
The tears in your eyes
Just wipe them away when they fall
See the wise old owl
As the evening comes
Silhouetted by the light of the moon
He has seen storms come
And he’s seen them go
And he knows that this will pass soon

The Plague
03:27
|
|
||
In a dust bowl town in Oklahoma around the summer of ’35
Sam Duncan got drunk and started talking about a plague that was coming around
The bartender laughed as he cut him off and sent him on his way
At the thought of drunken Duncan and that juiced old bum’s dismay
Two weeks later the virus hit and everyone went to bed
The doctor was working overtime on the living and the dead
Then the bartender remembered Sam Duncan’s drunken remarks
At exactly the day and hour that the rumors happened to start
The doctor called it a virus
The town folk called it a plague
And if Sam called it down upon us
We got only one person to blame
Fear got the best of reason like dust gets the best of rain
Sam got the worst of all, he took a bullet in the brain
The Sheriff came down with the fever and no arrests were made
The virus took its course and left the dust dancing over Duncan’s grave
The doctor called it a virus
The town folk called it a plague
And if Sam called it down upon us
We got only one person to blame

Hopeless Love
02:46
|
|||
Unrequited hopeless love
The kind that leaves you all shook up
The kind that makes your poor heart weep
And even haunts you in your sleep
Unrequited hopeless love
It’s like your heart has been handcuffed
You’ll sometimes think you’ve had enough
Of unrequited hopeless love
Unrequited hopeless love
No hope below and none above
You know you should forget but can’t give up
On unrequited hopeless love

Man On The Loose
03:04
|
|||
There’s a man on the loose
Escaped the asylum
The warden called the cops
When the guards couldn’t find him
Now he’s holed up in a house
In Washington, D. C.
Got an audience of millions
Every night on TV
He poses and he preens
He snarls and growls
Keep the women away
He’s always on the prowl
The World has never seen
Anything like this
So lock him in a cage
Just like the dog he is
He hasn’t got a friend
He lives all alone
Hasn’t got the heart
To toss a dying dog a bone
He’s got scores to settle
And grudges to redress
Says “One of these days
I’m gonna be the president.”

Harry's Song
02:04
|
|||
The sun has gone down
This is the end
But if I had it to do over again
I wouldn’t change a thing
Farewell my friend
The years all pass by
In the blink of an eye
They end up as memories
All that we know
Is we come and we go
The rest is a mystery
The sun has gone down
This is the end
But if I had it to do over again
I wouldn’t change a thing
Farewell my friend

Level & Square
03:40
|
|||
I’ve walked the straight and narrow
I’ve wandered crooked roads
I’ve flown free as an Eagle
And carried heavy loads
I’ve slept close to the fire
A few times I’ve been burned
I’ve read the world’s greatest books
And this is what I learned
Keep it plumb and on the level
Keep it true and on the square
Like a mason laying bricks
Or a joiner building stairs
Keep it plumb and on the level
Keep it true and on the square
So good luck on your way, my friend
And good luck when you get there
You share the streets with those you meet
Hustlers and pimps
They keep their eyes on you all the time
Waiting for you to slip
So beware of the danger
In the dance of life and death
Where love vies with indifference
It’s a crooked game at best
Keep it plumb and on the level
Keep it true and on the square
Like a mason laying bricks
Or a joiner building stairs
Keep it plumb and on the level
Keep it true and on the square
So good luck on your way, my friend
And good luck when you get there

All The Lies He Tells
03:29
|
|||
ALL THE LIES HE TELLS
The day’s arrived that we all thought
Would never come to pass
There’s a madman in the White House
Blowing smoke up our ass
We got Moscow Mitch in the Senate
And he's doing dirty deeds
And no holds Barr(ed) criminals
Hiding in the weeds
We’re filling up the graveyards.
There’s a virus killing us
It seems the whole damn country
Got thrown beneath the bus
So buckle up your seat belts
The country’s gone to hell
But you would never know it
From all the lies he tells
Back in Twenty Sixteen
When Scalia kicked the bucket
Mitch said let the people pick
The next Supreme Court Justice
But that was then and this is now
And to hell with all of that
Moscow Mitch has pulled a switch
And this is where we’re at
We’re filling up the graveyards.
There’s a virus killing us
It seems the whole damn country
Got thrown beneath the bus
So buckle up your seat belts
The country’s gone to hell
But you would never know it
From all the lies he tells
So put on your mask when you go out
And count your lucky stars
You could live in a real shit hole
Like Haiti or Zanzibar
You could be in a jailhouse
Just lucky to be alive
Instead of still holding out
Against Cult 45
We’re filling up the graveyards.
There’s a virus killing us
It seems the whole damn country
Got thrown beneath the bus
So buckle up your seat belts
The country’s gone to hell
But you would never know it
From all the lies he tells

Since Mama's Gone Away
02:17
|
|
||
A Child’s Prayer (2020)
Nobody knows my sorrow
And nobody knows my pain
They say it was the virus
That took Mama away
Now nights are filled with darkness
And days are always grey
Oh! What will become of me
Since Mama’s gone away?
They tell me she’s in Heaven
And it’s a better place
But I still miss Mama’s kiss
And the smile on Mama’s face
Nobody knows my sorrow
And nobody knows my pain
They say it was the virus
That took Mama away
He said there’d be a miracle
But the miracle never came
Oh! What will become of me
Since Mama’s gone away?
I prayed for a miracle
But the miracle never came
Oh! What will become of me
Since Mama’s gone away?

The Beast
03:33
|
|
||
It’s crazy in America
I oughta write a book
There’s trouble on the corner
And everywhere I look
I’m readin’ ‘bout the beast
In the Book of Revelation
Whose mouth is like a lion’s
Who’s feared by all the nations
And the beast comes rising
Up from the sea
And all the world wonders
Who the beast could be
The dragon gives him power
And all authority
His mouth is full of lies
It pours out blasphemy
The trumpets have been sounded
His fatal wound is healed
His time is almost over
They’ve opened all the seals
And the beast comes rising
Up from the sea
And all the world wonders
Who the beast could be
It’s crazy in America
I oughta write a book
There’s trouble on the corner
And everywhere you look
And all are made to worship
And have a mark affixed
And the number of the beast
Is six and six and six

Molly drove a pickup truck
With a Gadsden flag in back
Had a MAGA bumper sticker
And a custom made gun rack
Then the virus came along
And people put on masks
But when we asked Molly to
All she did was laugh
Molly oh Molly oh where did Molly go
That’s what everyone in town wants to know
Molly oh Molly everybody asks
Where is our Molly who would not wear a mask
As days went by the virus spread
From sea to shining sea
But everywhere that Molly went
Molly went mask-free
“I’m no snowflake,”Molly said
“And I never was
You’ll see me in a mask the day
The President wears one”
Molly oh Molly oh where did Molly go
That’s what everyone in town wants to know
Molly oh Molly everybody asks
Where is our Molly who would not wear a mask
She woke up not feeling well
On that fateful day
They took her to the hospital
But the cough wouldn’t go away
They hooked her up to IVs
They did all that they could
But Covid had the last word
And the last word wasn’t good
Molly oh Molly oh where did Molly go
That’s what everyone in town wants to know
Molly oh Molly everybody asks
Where is our Molly who would not wear a mask
Molly oh Molly always went mask-free
She said she’d rather die than lose her liberty
Molly oh Molly everybody asks
Where is our Molly who would not wear a mask

World Gone Wrong
03:20
|
|||
Man in the village square
Holding up a sign
Sign says “Demonrats
Organized Crime”
“Revolt!” he shouts
Fist thrust in the air
He’s screaming at a world
That doesn’t really care
In a World gone wrong
Someone’s gotta pay
It might be tomorrow
Or it might be today
In a World gone wrong
The plant shut down nine months ago
After COVID came
Lost his job
Says the Governor’s to blame
He turned 61 last week
Fast running out of luck
Flies the flag upside down
On the back of his pickup truck
In a World gone wrong
Someone’s gotta pay
It might be tomorrow
Or it might be today
In a World gone wrong

Haven’t you heard there’s a virus goin’ around

If you won’t be careful the virus gonna knock you down
If you won’t be careful the virus gonna knock you down
It doesn’t take a genius so why are you acting so dense

You’re hanging out in bars like you ain’t got a lick of sense

Instrumental
Can you see my finger can you see my thumb
Can you see my finger can you see my thumb
When you see a crowd comin’ honey you better run

You won’t wear a mask, you must be dumb as a rock
You won’t wear a mask, you must be dumb as a rock
Keep acting like a fool and you’ll end up in a wooden box
Keep acting like a fool and you’ll end up in a wooden box
Instrumental
It doesn’t take a genius so why do you have to ask
It doesn’t take a genius so why do you have to ask
Shut your loudmouth and put on a friggin’ mask

Goodnight
03:39
|
|||
Close your eyes my Sweetheart
And I’ll sing you a lullaby
I’ll sing you such a sweet melody
It could almost make the Angels cry
Goodnight my Love, sleep tight tonite
Goodnight my Love My Love goodnight
Close your eyes my Baby
Tonight everything will be alright
I’ll hold you tight in my arms
And you’ll sleep like a baby tonite
Goodnight my Love, sweet dreams tonite
Goodnight my Love My Love goodnight
Close your eyes my Sweetheart
And I’ll sing you a lullaby
I’ll sing you such a sweet melody
It could almost make the Angels cry
Goodnight my Love, sweet dreams tonite
Goodnight my Love My Love goodnight
