Gospel train

Standing out in the cold
Waiting at the station
Coat collar turned up against the rain
He was worn out, old and grey
From years of tribulation
Waiting patiently to board the Gospel Train
The conductor calls out “All Aboard”
This train is bound for glory
Your tickets have been paid in Jesus’ name
The last shall be the first aboard
And the first shall be the last
There’s room for all aboard the Gospel Train
In a crowded hospital ward
Staring out the window
Hands pressed against the window pane
She was worn out, old and grey
From years of tribulation
Waiting patiently to board the Gospel Train
The conductor calls out “All Aboard”
This train is bound for glory
Your tickets have been paid in Jesus’ name
The last shall be the first aboard
And the first shall be the last
There’s room for all aboard the Gospel Train

I’ve noticed your inattention
You always seem so far away
And when I’m talking to you
You look the other way
It doesn’t take a genius
To figure out the score
Why don’t you just come out and say it
If you don’t love me anymore
You’re keeping your thoughts hidden
But I can see it in your eyes
And that look of indifference
You don’t bother to disguise
It doesn’t take a genius
To figure out the score
Why don’t you just come out and say it
If you don’t love me anymore
Don’t pretend to be a martyr
Or betray me with a kiss
I’ve survived heartaches before
And stronger storms than this
I don’t need an explanation
I don’t need a reason why
Don’t waste your time denying
What I see with my own eyes
It doesn’t take a genius
To figure out the score
Why don’t you just come out and say it
If you don’t love me anymore

A short time ago
And not far away
In the gambling houses
Where the bankers do play
A gazillion got stolen
But the cops never came
Now who was that fool
Who said crime doesn’t pay
And I wish Woody Guthrie was here
He’d tell off the bankers
In a voice loud and clear
He’d give ‘em all hell
From now to next year
And I wish Woody Guthrie was here
Barnum was right
It’s all how you spin it
In the world there’s a sucker
Born every minute
In Lower Manhattan
Where the Great Temple stands
The Bears and the Bulls
Are still fleecing the lambs
And I wish Woody Guthrie was here
He’d tell off the bankers
In a voice loud and clear
He’d give ‘em all hell
From now to next year
And I wish Woody Guthrie was here
They got fancy names
For the scams that they run
They own lawyers and judges
And all the politicians
They’ll keep you in debt
‘Cause that’s how they roll
And when you can’t pay the interest
They’ll put a lien on your soul

Family album

Far from the suburbs
In an old kitchen cupboard
There’s a Family Album
Gatherin’ dust on the shelf
There’s picture of Mother
Father and brothers
And a kid who looks
A lot like myself
Hold on to sweet memories
Probably the last thing that I dream
Outside of town
There’s a small piece of ground
Where my Dad sleeps forever
Beneath the blue sky
Ma moved down south
And the kids all spread out
Like a bomb burst
On the 4th of July
Hold on to sweet memories
Probably the last thing that I dream

Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
There’s war everywhere and soldiers on the march
But the band’s on stage and the show’s about to start
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
The sea level’s rising and storms are off the chart
But it’s half past eight and the show’s about to start
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
Don’t lay your guilt trip on me
‘Cause I’m not falling for that
Everything I got I earned the hard, hard way
It’s tough all over, what else can I say
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
From Newark to New Delhi in places near and far
There’s bellies full of empty and hopeless hearts
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart
There’s homeless folks living out of shopping carts
So pour me some Cognac and hand me a cigar
Let’s dance and make merry ’til the world falls apart

Seven careless angels
04:28
|

© Dan Sullivan 2013
Shadows are falling
Evening has come
A streetlight is blinking
Like eyes in the sun
Balanced on high heels
In the midsummer heat
Seven Careless Angels
Walk the Angeles streets
They’re poised and they’re painted
In lipstick and rouge
They hardly look saintly
From our point of view
There’s no Virgin Mary
On the streets where they walk
Just crosses to carry
And the souls of the lost.
As the evening’s unfolding
There’s burdens to bear
But no hearts of gold
On the streets anywhere
What you do for love
They do to survive
Can you blame them for wanting
To just stay alive
The men bearing treasure
Come and go never blamed
They chase after pleasure
Hearts unashamed
They travel around the world
Hoping Angels to find
But the Angels they look for
Aren’t the heavenly kind
Malaya was 30
Headin’ over the hill
But the men like them younger
When they’re looking for thrills
So she worked on the side streets
She did what she could
But the bad always seemed
To outweigh the good
One morning her children
Wake up all alone
For the first and the last time
She doesn’t come home
The night clerk was leaving
When he found her outside
She was buried on Friday
And the children all cried
Darkness is falling
The night’s drawing near
A streetlight is blinking
Like eyes full of tears
Children are waiting
For moms to come home
As Seven Careless Angels
Walk the dark streets alone

Do you ever think about me anymore?
Does the thought of me ever cross your mind?
Many nights I wondered why you left me
I tell myself I’m not to blame but still I wonder why
Do you ever think about me anymore?
Does the thought of me ever cross your mind?
You never sent a birthday card or a letter
You never called or came around, didn’t you have the time?
Do you ever think about me anymore?
Does the thought of me ever cross your mind?

Pardon me

Thank you for the email
Telling me we’re through
I know how hard that must have been
For someone like you
You say the timing isn’t right
Still it touched my heart to learn
You’re still in love with me
After kicking me to the curb
But Pardon Me for not getting
All choked up inside
Over all the pain
Your poor heart’s going through
You know it’s almost a relief
And it’s way beyond belief
How many lies a heart will buy
Ain’t it sad but true
Well I can see you’re fishing
For some sympathy
Your email almost makes it sound
Like this hurts you more than me
But it’s you that’s breaking up with me
Not the other way around
And if it didn’t hurt so much
I could almost laugh out loud
But Pardon Me for not getting
All choked up inside
Over all the pain
Your poor heart’s going through
You know it’s almost a relief
And it’s way beyond belief
How many lies a heart will buy
Ain’t it sad but true
How many lies a heart will buy
Hiding from the truth
So don’t feel sorry for me
Hell, I feel sorry for you

Ruined love
03:05
|

© Dan Sullivan 2013
I must have been out of my mind when I fell in love with you
What on earth was I thinking of?
Lust can easily spark a raging fire
But all it leaves behind is Ruined Love
You drew me in with a touch as soft as velvet
I fell for you and I didn’t need a shove
You kissed me and you set my soul on fire
But all you left behind was Ruined Love
A few charred photographs
Are still smoldering
In the ashes of love that used to be
I’m searching through
Blackened bits & pieces
Hoping to find just one good memory
Beauty shines much brighter than the sunlight
It can blind and leave you wishing for what was
Sirens may be calling from the shoreline
But Angels say beware of Ruined Love
Yeah, Angels say beware of Ruined Love
Angels say beware of Ruined Love

Love made me believe
03:35
|
|||
© Dan Sullivan 2013
If all the world is an illusion
Then the sky must not be blue
And if life is but a dream
Even love might not be true
But what kind of a world would it be
If even love was make believe
I won’t live in a world
Where I can’t believe
In love that’s real
As your love for me
And I’d lay down my life
I’d give it up twice
Or a thousand times
I’d pay any price
For love made me believe
Some say love is just a feeling
But I never fell for that
Some say love’s a passing fancy
Others say love never lasts
But what kind of a world would it be
To hear of love and not believe
I won’t live in a world
Where I can’t believe
In love as real
As your love for me
And I’d lay down my life
I’d give it up twice
Or a thousand times
I’d pay any price
For love made me believe
If all the world is an illusion
I still believe in love
